A Dream, a House and an Amazing Community

A year ago my family came together with a dream, a dream to build something lasting – to build a house for Habitat for Humanity, an organization we truly admire and believe in. We kicked off our dream last July with the annual Kristi Visocky Memorial Golf Tournament, and now, a year later that dream is finally a reality. The House that Kristi Built – Celebrating Community is being built.

The site for our Habitat House is fairly close to my home and I pass by it most days when I take my morning walk. At first there was just a mound of dirt, and then one day the mound turned into a hole in the ground. Now when I walk by, I see the beginnings of a foundation.

I realize that foundation represents the support of an amazing community of friends who have sustained my family over the past eleven years since our daughter Kristi died. Through your generous support, wonderful beginnings have sprouted from the ashes of grief. Kristi’s Fund has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships and support for area young women and organizations. Now, you have come together once again, to help us build this house. Thus the name: The House that Kristi Built – Celebrating Community. For we celebrate you and all you give to us and our city.

I take photos of the house as I pass, to chronicle the build. I imagine it emerging and growing piece by piece, like a tree sprouting from the ground, reaching towards the sky, one branch, one leaf at a time. The house will be strong and solid, because it is built on a foundation of love and kindness and a belief that we are all in this together, and together we can build anything.

The House that Kristi Built – Celebrating Community is Your House! Yours, ours, and everyone who played a role in making a house for Habitat for Humanity come to fruition. To all of YOU who have supported our family over the years and helped to make this dream a reality, we say thank you.

The House that Kristi Built – Celebrating Community honors all of you, the members of our community. There are too many names to mention but know that you played an important role in making it possible. You know who you are. This is Your House!

As we watch this house take shape, from the foundation, to the walls, to the roof… we hope you share in the pride of accomplishment we can all feel. We did this together – working side by side to make a dream possible. You are building something lasting – not just a house for a family to live in who now know they have a safe and secure place to call home – you are building a strong and caring community that supports each other in making the world a better place.

We invite YOU to celebrate the building of this house at a very special event:
Wall Raising – What’s a Wall Raising? Much like an old-fashioned barn raising, we are going to build the walls and frame in the entire house – all in one day! You’re invited to help us raise the walls on Saturday, June 14 at 8am. No experience necessary.

We are still raising funds to complete The House that Kristi Built and have dedicated the proceeds from this year’s golf tournament and Kristi’s Big Night Out to the campaign. We hope you will attend and support the project at these two fun events. We are also in need of volunteers to help build the house over the next four months as well as in-kind products and services: windows, doors, light fixtures, insulation, carpeting and more.
