Nine Area Young Women to Receive Scholarships from the
Kristi Visocky Memorial Foundation
The Kristi Visocky Memorial Foundation announced today that nine area young women will receive $2000 scholarships for the 2010-11 school year. Recipients are Jessica Torres, Whitney Adams, Jessica Waechter, Brandy Cox, Katie Stapleton, Kathryn Santon, Alejandra Merjil, Corbie Cordova and Miranda Hovey. The Kristi Visocky Memorial Foundation, a.k.a. Kristi’s Fund, was created in memory of Kristi Visocky who was killed in an auto accident in May of 2003 at the age of 21. Determined to keep alive the spirit and compassion of a young woman who was a strong champion of the underdog and supporter of troubled youth, Kristi’s Fund was set up to provide scholarships and assistance to area young people.
The young women who have benefited from the Kristi Visocky Memorial Foundation Scholarships are the very types Kristi supported: young, displaced girls and single moms, working to pull their life back together and create a better life for themselves and their families. One such woman, a single mom of three little boys, who was embarking on nursing school, put it this way when told she would receive a $2000 scholarship to Front Range Community College, “You don’t know what this means to me. It’s not just the money for school, it’s that you believe in me and believe that I can do this!”
The scholarships will be awarded on Friday, July 29 at the Kristi’s Big Night Out “Everything 80's” event at the Fort Collins Hilton, 425 W. Prospect.
